How TerraSpatial Works
An engineering breakdown of our 100% static client-side architecture, in-browser geodetic computation engine, and strict zero-telemetry security model.
Static Edge Delivery & Zero Server Dependency
Traditional GIS web services rely on server-side processing backends (such as GeoServer, MapServer, or Python microservices) running on remote cloud clusters. When a user requests a coordinate reprojection or bounding box calculation, the client browser transmits parameters across the public internet to a remote server, waits for computational queuing, and receives the serialized response.
This conventional architecture introduces significant vulnerabilities:
- Network Latency: Roundtrip HTTP latency typically adds 150 to 500 milliseconds per calculation, degrading interactive engineering workflows.
- Service Availability: Server restarts, database locks, or backend downtime disable critical tools during field operations.
- Data Exposure: Sending sensitive project coordinates, military survey points, or proprietary infrastructure locations across third-party networks introduces compliance and security risks.
TerraSpatial operates on a completely different paradigm: 100% static delivery with in-browser execution. The entire application consists of static HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript delivered directly from Cloudflare Pages edge nodes located within milliseconds of users globally. Once loaded, the web application runs entirely disconnected from the server.
In-Browser Computational Engine
TerraSpatial executes complex mathematical, geodetic, and photogrammetric algorithms directly inside your browser's V8, SpiderMonkey, or JavaScriptCore engine using modern floating-point arithmetic.
1. Geodetic & Coordinate Math (Proj4js Integration)
For coordinate reference system transformations, TerraSpatial loads a pinned, lightweight distribution of Proj4js from official CDN infrastructure. Proj4js brings the proven cartographic algorithms of the OSGeo PROJ library directly into the browser runtime:
- Helmert 7-Parameter Transformation: Executes 3 translations, 3 rotations, and 1 scale factor to shift coordinates between global WGS84 ellipsoids and local European, North American, and British datums.
- Transverse Mercator Forward and Inverse: Implements high-order Krüger series expansions computing central meridian convergence, meridian arc length, and conformal footprint coordinates.
- Analytical Offline Fallbacks: In the event of network disruption or CDN blockage, our custom mathematical library executes analytical UTM conversions with millimeter precision.
2. Spectral Band Math & Epsilon Safeguards
Satellite band math calculations (such as the Sealed Urban Index, NDVI, and NBR) evaluate surface reflectance values in browser memory. To ensure numerical robustness across edge cases (such as clear water bodies or cloud shadows where denominator reflectance sums approach zero), our mathematical functions incorporate an automated epsilon offset:
denominator = Math.max(band_a + band_b, 1e-6);
index_value = (band_a - band_b) / denominator;
This prevents IEEE 754 division-by-zero errors (producing NaN or Infinity) and guarantees stable numerical outputs across the entire dynamic range of modern 12-bit and 14-bit satellite sensors.
3. Solar Geometry & Astronomical Trigonometry
Spatial solar tools execute Cooper's solar declination series, Spencer's equation of time approximations, and isotropic/anisotropic sky diffuse radiation models in local memory. All topocentric elevation and azimuth angles are computed instantaneously as you adjust latitude and seasonal parameters.
Zero-Telemetry & Data Security Guarantee
We believe that professional engineering tools must respect user privacy by default. TerraSpatial implements a strict zero-telemetry policy:
- Zero Tracking Scripts: No Google Analytics, no Facebook Pixels, no advertising trackers, and no external user session recorders.
- Zero Server Logging: Because all calculations occur client-side, our hosting servers never see your inputs, coordinates, or project dimensions.
- Zero Cookie Persistence: The platform does not set tracking or profiling cookies. Only standard browser cache mechanisms are utilized to enable rapid offline re-access.
- Field Tablet & Offline Readiness: Once cached by your browser, all 8 tools can be operated in remote field environments without an active internet or cellular connection.
